Mao Dun, an outstanding modern Chinese writer, was born here and his masterpiece, ’The Lin’s Family Shop’, describes vividly the life of Wuzhen. After the Japanese invasion of China, young students set off a boycott of Japanese goods. Boss Lin in a small town in east China bribes the chairman of Chamber of Commerce who gives Lin a tacit consent to sell Japanese goods. Lin conducted auction to sell these products and squeezes other small capital counter parts. But he also is exploited by the government officials, police, and gendarme. In this chaos, Lins shop bankrupts and he runs away with other peoples money saved in his shop.
